The activities of the Space applications laboratory consist in the experimental study of mechatronic systems aimed at the identification of the mathematical models describing their dynamic behaviour. The study is focused on the dynamic response of the mechatronic system, characterized in representative conditions of the real ones. An example of mechatronic system is the grabbing positioning and release mechanism for the ESA LISA Pathfinder space mission, here qualified for its in-flight performance. An in-vacuum pendulum-based testing facility has been designed and commissioned for the characterization of the grabbing and release function of a reference mass for the spacecraft navigation and measurement of gravity waves.
